5 Unconventional Honeymoon Destinations

Once the “I dos” are checked off and all that wedding planning is over, its time for some well-deserved honeymoon bliss. The question is where? If you and your man are not fans of those tried and tested “romantic” destinations, check out our list for 5 original honeymoon ideas.

Bacalar, Mexico

Can’t decide between a beach holiday and a cultural destination? This ancient Mayan town in Southern Mexico offers both. Bacalar is anchored by one of the most beautiful lakes on earth: the Lagoon of Seven Colors. The lake is renowned for its different shades of blue and amazing water clarity, due to a white limestone bottom. Honeymooners can spend their days visiting ancient archaeological ruins or swimming in Cenote Azul, one of the many turquoise pools than the Mayans used to communicate with the Gods. Stay at one of the town’s best hotels, Akalki Bacalar, a wellness center that offers luxurious cabañas built over the lagoon. The best part of Bacalar is its pristine nature and raw Mexican character that still remain unspoiled by mainstream tourism. Hurry and visit this gem before everyone else finds out.

Paphos, Cyprus

Where better to spend your honeymoon than on the “Island of Love?” Cyprus is a land for the romantics, rich in culture and history. According to Greek mythology, the goddess of love, Aphrodite, emerged from the sea in Paphos—a city on the island's southwest coast. Today, you can still visit Aphrodite’s birthplace, which is tucked away in a small town 30km from Paphos. With three hundred days of sunshine, glorious Mediterranean cuisine, and beautiful beaches, what are you waiting for?

The Galapagos Islands offers a remarkable wildlife experience that draws thousands of visitors every year, including Charles Darwin. Honeymoon packages now offer the ability for newlyweds to board a deluxe yacht, where they get to hike, island-hop and snorkel with sharks, turtles, and exotic fish during the day, and enjoy fine dining and lectures by an on-board master naturalist in the evenings.

Kanazawa, Japan

With its incredible food and sights, its no wonder Kanazawa is increasingly becoming a top destination for many honeymooners. Often referred to as “Little Kyoto,” this city offers many of Kyoto’s charms without the horde of tourists. Kanazawa is one of the best-preserved districts of Japan’s Edo Period and was constructed by the samurai, the highest social class at the time. The Kenrouken, a large landscaped garden designed by the Maeda samurai family still stands today as a top city attraction. Are you and your sweetie sushi fans? Kanazawa's location between the Sea of Japan and the Japanese Alps means you won’t be short of fresh and high-quality sushi and sashimi.
